Which one are you?

I’ve been asking Contractors lately:

Which one costs your business more: Missed calls, slow follow-up, or no follow-up at all?

Most people tend to say “all three.” Which, yeah, I guess that’s true…

But that answer is actually the problem with how a lot of folks run their businesses. We acknowledge that many things are issues at the same time, and we should address them all, but thinking like that only leads to burnout and feeling overwhelmed.

So after people say “all three,” I have a follow-up question:

Which would you tackle first if you realized all 3 were a problem?

Now we’re getting somewhere.

If you wanna solve important problems in your business, you need to pick one at a time to focus on.

If you’re struggling with missed calls, slow follow-up, and no follow-up, my suggestion would be to start with missed calls. Make sure you’re answering every call that comes in!

Then, address no follow-up. Finally, once you’re answering every call and following up with every lead, improve your processes to make the follow-up faster.

That’s a doable, step-by-step approach to solving the problems. But trying to think about and solve them all at once is just not helpful.

So next time you’re tempted to say “yeah… all these things are a problem” about any area of your business, follow it up by asking “so which should we tackle first?”
