You never know...
Way back in the day…
There’s a farmer, and he is probably one of the richer farmers around, because he has a horse, and nobody else can have a horse. One day his horse escapes from the pen.
The farmer went into town. Everybody said, “Oh, how sad that you lost your horse.” The farmer said, “Well, maybe good, maybe bad. You never know.”
The next day the horse came back, and right into the pen he led 3 wild horses, so now the farmer has 4 horses. He went to town later in the day, and everybody said, “Oh, you’re so lucky. You’re so fortunate,” and the very wise farmer says, “Well, maybe good, maybe bad. You never know.”
The next day his son, who was 20 years old, was trying to break one of the wild horses, and he fell off and broke his leg. Later in the day, the farmer went to town. Everybody said, “Oh, sorry to hear about your son. How unfortunate.” The farmer said, “Well, maybe good, maybe bad. You never know.”
The next day, the people were coming from the Army to recruit the young men who were over the age 20 because the country was going to go to war. Of course, they couldn’t recruit the young man, because he had a broken leg. So you see where the story’s going…
We just never know, and we say, “Oh, this is the most important date of my life. This is the most important job of my life.”
But you really never know, so don’t treat it that way. You just want to be consistent. You don’t want to be like a rollercoaster saying “This is important. This is unimportant.” You treat everything with dignity, treat everything with importance, but treat nothing special.
On this note - it really bothers me when people talk about marketing as though one channel is “special” compared to everything else.
You see a Contractor say something like “PPC is where it’s at. It’s all about PPC ads. This is the place to be right now.”
Is PPC a good channel? Of course. Go for it. But don’t be fooled…
Whether you do PPC, SEO, social media, door-to-door, or any other number of tactics, you need to remember something Dan Antonelli says about building your relationship with marketing and marketing agencies:
“Your responsibility is simple: build a brand that people know, like and trust.”
Everything else is secondary to that.
