My thoughts on AI (Part 1/3)

This is the first in a 3-part email series about artificial intelligence.

I’m going to share with you 3 distinct messages about what’s working for Contractors in A.I., what’s not working, and my predictions for the future.

(NOTE: Will you reply to this email with your prediction on A.I. in the trades? There are no wrong answers… speculation is fun!)

First, let’s start with what A.I. is useful for:

The other day I was on a call with a marketing company that needed to find every instance of a particular phrase in a 40-page Google doc. At first, he sighed…

The thought of reading through all that content felt like a waste of energy. Then I said “just ask ChatGPT to do it.” So he uploaded the doc to ChatGPT and asked it to pull out every instance of the phrase.

Within 10 seconds, the job was done.

Imagine doing this for job candidates! If you have a pile of resumes to go through, you could just upload them all to ChatGPT and ask it to identify all the resumes that match your criteria.

A.I. can also:

  • Write SOPs

  • Come up with content ideas

  • Write job descriptions

  • Summarize and pull data from a dataset

  • Clean up data to get a clean CSV file

  • Write code

  • Automate tasks with Zapier

  • Respond to website chats

Plus - A.I. is still so NEW! We are only seeing the very beginning of the A.I. revolution. The current iterations of A.I. are like MySpace in the world of social media - no longer relevant, but huge because it was first.

You can think of A.I. in its current form as a very cheap assistant. It’s not yet great at completing very many tasks, but it can assist you in making office admin work go a lot faster.

If you’re not sure what it can do for you, just go to ChatGPT and enter this prompt:

"This is a list of all the things I’m responsible for at work:

[ENTER YOUR LIST]

Which of these items can you assist me in completing? Please be detailed and write one paragraph for each item explaining whether you can assist, what your limits are, and what you would need from me to help with the work.”

Next time, I’ll explain what’s not working in A.I….
